This is a charming example of a large mug or tankard produced by the Wold Pottery, which was founded by Aidan Dixon in 1954.
The mug has a barrel-shaped body and a plain, strap-like handle. On one side is a raised motif of a large red dog, reminiscent of a Red or Irish Setter. The interior of the tankard, handle, and dog are glazed in the same streaky reddish-brown glaze. The remainder of the piece is glazed in black.
The underside is impressed with the words ‘WOLD’, ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’, HAND THROWN’ and ‘ROUTH BEVERLEY YORKSHIRE’.
The mug has a height of approximately 12.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.6cm and across the base of about 8.3cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 650ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 520g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
