This is a classic example of a ruby glass bud vase produced by Whitefriars in the 1960s and 1970s.
The vase is of tapering form, widening out towards the base. It has a ruby glass core and is encased in a thick layer of flint (clear) glass, which can be seen at the base.
This piece has the pattern number 9655 and can be seen on page 24 of the 1969 Whitefriars catalogue. There were three sizes produced in this design; this is the medium size.
It has a height of approximately 19.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 3.4cm and across the base of about 4.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 410g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few scratches to the exterior of the vase, which are commensurate with age and use.
