This is a high-quality lead crystal small wine goblet from the ‘Apollo’ suite produced by Whitefriars.
The goblet is reminiscent of the style of Georgian rummers, with a straight-sided bowl that then tapers in towards the thickened base. This sits on a pronounced discoid collar, which merges with the thick, waisted stem. This widens out again to merge with the thick, discoid foot. The latter is plain and unmarked.
This suite has pattern number 2481 and can be seen on page 32 of the 1940 Whitefriars catalogue. This particular glass is which is called the ‘s/s goblet’; there is one glass larger than this in the suite.
It has a height of approximately 13.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of 8.9cm and across the foot of about 8.0cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 310ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 360g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a number of small fine scratches to the circumference of the bowl commensurate with age and use. This wear is visible on close inspection and the price reflects this.
