This is a rustic example of a handmade pottery mug or tankard for real ale produced by Tremar Pottery and dating to around the 1970s to early 1980s.
The tankard is approximately cylindrical and has a broad, strap-like handle attached approximately halfway down the body.
It is moulded on the exterior with a cartouche containing stylised barley ears, birds and a cloud. There is a raised band around the rim with the words ‘REAL ALE’ moulded in relief. The whole has been glazed in a deep brown, over which is a pale cream layer. The brown shows through on the text and motif, and appears patchy through the lighter glaze layer.
The base is unglazed and is impressed at the edge with ‘TREMAR U.K.’
It has a height of approximately 11.3cm and a diameter across the rim and base of 9.0cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 500ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 500g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd burst bubble within the glaze, which is a manufacturing artefact.
