This is a classic example of a high-quality porcelain gravy fat and lean separator by the French company Pillivuyt.
The gravy or ‘fat and lean’ separator has a gently scalloped rim and a waisted body. The lower half is moulded with vertical ribs. At either end of the piece are pouring spouts; one of these spouts extends down towards the base to aid in the separation of the gravy. There are two handles on opposing sides of the body.
The base is plain and is impressed with ’27. 01. 1928′. In addition, it is marked in green with the words ‘PILLIVUYT FRANCE P 814’ and also the number ’50’.
Traditionally, these separators are used for resting meat juices so that they can be poured out from underneath the fat, which is less dense and therefore floats to the top. The rendered fat can be used (with flour) to create a roux to thicken the resting juices and create a rich gravy.
It has a height of approximately 7.4cm, with a maximum length of 15.7cm and a maximum width of about 12.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 280g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
