This is a classic example of a mug or half-pint tankard produced at the Godshill Pottery, which was situated in the New Forest in Hampshire.
The mug has a thickened rim, tapering in slightly before widening out again towards the thickened, bevelled base. There is a broad, concave, strap-like handle which sits centrally on the body.
The interior and top portion of the exterior are glazed in a dark brown shade. The lower half of the tankard is decorated with a dark mustard yellow band, over which is a row of lenticular shapes in brown, arranged vertically. This panel is bordered above and below by a pair of circumferential stripes in dark brown.
The bevelled edge and underside of the base are unglazed, revealing the underlying terracotta-coloured body. This is incised by hand at the edge with the word ‘GODSHILL’.
It has a height of approximately 9.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.6cm and across the base of about 9.6cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 425ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 300g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze, commensurate with age and use.
