This is a classic example of a high-quality Italian glass vase, probably dating to the 1970s or 1980s.
The vase is made with the sommerso technique, with an internal purple layer, a central yellow core, and a thick layer of clear glass to encase them.
The vase has a square top and has been cut and polished to give a geometric appearance. Each flat side of the square has been polished to give a triangular facet. There is a smaller triangular facet below this, tapering the vase in at the base. There is a large irregular hexagonal facet (normally kite-shaped) at each corner (from the top) that terminates at the base.
The base is polished flat and unmarked.
The vase bears the original black and gold oval label, which reads ‘CRISTALLO INTAGLIATO A MANO V. A. M. MURANO HAND CUT CRISTALL’.
Although the sticker is a generic Murano label, the colourways used in this sommerso are frequently seen on vintage pieces by Madruzzato. The style is also the same as the currently produced ‘Drop Vase’, with the dimensions for the extra-small piece matching this vase.
The vase has a height of approximately 15.1cm, a width across the top of about 3.8cm and a maximum width of 5.1cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 610g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a very small blemish on one edge, which is smooth, and so I believe it may be a burst bubble (see pictures). There is also some roughness to the inner rim of the opening, probably from polishing.
