This is a high-quality cut lead crystal wine decanter from the ‘Regent’ suite produced by Stuart Crystal.
The decanter has an everted rim, narrowing to form the elongated neck and tapering body. This form is commonly referred to as ‘mallet-shaped’.
It is cut on the underside of the rim with eight petal-shaped facets, which extend down the neck and onto the ‘shoulder’. There are two sets of three circumferential mitre cuts on the neck.
The body is cut with two rows of eleven interlocking cross cuts. The centre of each cross in the uppermost row is surmounted by a vertical mitre cut.
The thickened base is star-cut in the centre and marked at the edge with the words ‘STUART ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from around 1950.
The stopper is of solid mushroom form and is cut on the apex with a ring of radiating wedge cuts. The neck is cut with six facets that extend down to meet the top of the peg. The stopper and the rim of the decanter are hand-engraved with the number ‘2’, which shows that this is the original stopper.
This wine decanter can be seen on page 28 of the 1956 Stuart Crystal catalogue under the ‘Regent’ suite, which has pattern number 29301.
The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of 24.5cm and a height to the rim of 20.0cm. It has a diameter across the rim of about 6.2cm and across the base of about 10.7cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the shoulder) of 700ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1080g.
It is in good condition, with a few very minor nicks within the cutting and at the rim. There are also some wear and tear scratches to the body, and more on the edge of the base, commensurate with use. This wear is reflected in the price.
