This is a high-quality lead crystal large brandy glass from the ‘Glengarry’ suite, produced by Stuart Crystal in the second half of the 20th century.
The capacious, balloon-shaped bowl is cut around the centre with a band of twelve large crosses. Above the centre of each cross is a vertical mitre cut. Within the diamond-shaped panels formed between adjacent large crosses is a lattice formed from two pairs of parallel lines.
There is a broad discoid attachment at the junction of the bowl and short, tapering stem. The foot is plain and marked in the centre with the word ‘STUART’. This mark was in use from 1950.
This brandy balloon can be seen in the 1956 Stuart Crystal catalogue and is called the ’20oz Brandy’. This is the largest size of brandy glass available from the suite.
It has a height of approximately 14.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.0cm and across the foot of about 7.9cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 650ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 320g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd wear and tear scratch to the bowl commensurate with age.
