This is a striking, high-quality cut lead crystal wine decanter from the ‘Cascade’ suite by Stuart Crystal.
The decanter is of classic elongated form, with a slightly everted rim and waisted neck. This is cut with four rows of eight facets, the lowermost ones being more oval in shape as they extend down onto the body. The latter is bulbous in shape and cut with three sprigs of stylised fuchsias. The leaves and stems are cut and polished, whereas the flower heads are in matte intaglio.
The base of the decanter is thickened and star-cut in the centre. Along the edge it is marked with the word ‘STUART’, although this is hard to discern.
The stopper is of solid spire form and is cut with eight facets on the upper tapering portion. Below this, the stopper has a waisted portion above the peg. This is also cut with eight facets but these are staggered with respect to those above. The peg is plain and polished. The interior of the neck is ground to allow tight fitting with the stopper.
In addition, the decanter bears the original blue and silver hexagonal label, which reads ‘STUART CRYSTAL’.
The Stuart Crystal catalogue shows the decanter as having pattern number 30805/079.
It has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 34.2cm and a height to the rim of 25.8cm. It has a diameter across the rim of 5.3cm and across the base of 7.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1220g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd enclosed bubble within the glass, including one at the rim.
