This is a classic example of a set of six coffee cups and saucers from the sought-after ‘Black Pebble’ range, designed by Robert Jefferson for Poole Pottery in 1959.
The cup is of simple form, with a rounded body that tapers in towards the base. A small curved handle attaches just below the rim and again above the base. It is glazed in black with a satin finish on the exterior and underside of the base. The latter is unmarked. The interior is white
The saucer is round with a slightly upturned rim. There is a central moulded cup ring. The front is printed with the ‘Black Pebble’ motif. The reverse is white and marked in the centre with a grey-green oval containing the words ‘POOLE ENGLAND’ with the classic dolphin motif,
Each cup has a height of approximately 5.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.1cm and across the base of about 3.4cm. Each saucer has a diameter of 12.2cm.
They have an unwrapped weight of 990g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although the glazing around the cup rim is a little uneven where it meets the white of the interior.
