This is a highly collectible character jug, originally designed by Harry Fenton in 1949 for Royal Doulton.
The piece is moulded in the form of Falstaff, who is depicted wearing a yellow tunic, a brown hat with yellow plumes, and sporting a brown beard. The reverse is incised with the name ‘SIR JOHN FALSTAFF’. Falstaff is a fictional character created by William Shakespeare.
The base is marked in green with the words ‘PRODUCED EXCLUSIVELY FOR U.K. FAIRS LTD. IN A SPECIAL EDITION OF 1500’. In addition, it bears the Royal Doulton logo in the centre surrounded by the words ‘HAND MADE AND HAND DECORATED ROYAL DOULTON FALSTAFF D 6795 MODELLED BY H. FENTON © 1949 ROYAL DOULTON NEW COLOURWAY 1987’.
This particular jug is hand-numbered as number 89 of the limited edition of 1500.
It has a maximum height of approximately 16.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 750g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing in some areas of the glaze. There are also a couple of slivers out of the underside of the base which I believe may have been caused during manufacture, possibly to remove some glaze drips.
