Pair of Wade ‘Everlasting Candles’ in White with Floral Design c.1960s

This is a charming pair of earthenware ‘Everlasting Candles’ produced by Wade, Heath & Co. Ltd of Burslem, Staffordshire, probably dating to the 1960s.

Each ‘candle’ comes in two parts. The upper ‘candle’ portion is made from a tapering ceramic tube, which is curved at the apex and angled at the bottom. It is glazed in white and transfer-printed with sprigs of stylised flowers in various designs. Each piece has the original ‘wick’ inside, extending out of the top.

The lower margin is marked in black with the words ‘WADE EVERLASTING CANDLE PATENT APPLIED FOR S 25/19’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ on the reverse. These marks are quite worn as they are along the edge that sits inside the base.

The stand for each ‘candle’ has a central, deep galleried section to allow the ceramic candle to be seated. This is unglazed on the interior, which is why the manufacturer’s marks have worn. This galleried portion flares out to form a six-lobed floral section, which steps down and forms a second, wider tier. These are glazed and decorated in the same way as the ‘candle’ portions.

The underside of each base is hollow and marked in the centre with the words ‘WADE ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from 1957.

Each candle and stand has a height of approximately 21.5cm and a maximum width across the base of 10.5cm.

They have an unwrapped weight of 510g.

They are in good condition, although one candle has a crack in the base (see pictures). This damage is not visible when on display, but is reflected in the price.
