This is a stylish example of a pottery potpourri or candleholder produced by Barbara Winrow, probably during her time in Campsall, Yorkshire, in the early 1970s.
The piece has a flared rim, which narrows to create a capstan-like top. Below this, the body is approximately ovoid in shape, sitting on a discoid base. There are three holes arranged equidistantly around the centre, each measuring around 6.5cm in diameter.
It is glazed in a pale stone-grey shade, over which is applied a light terracotta. This gives the body a mottled and streaked finish. Each circular aperture is encircled by a ring of petal-like brushstrokes in dark brown. There is a ring of pale brown around the capstan top and below it.
The base is recessed in the centre and glazed. The outer edge of the base is impressed with the words ‘BARBARA WINROW’, although the surname is hard to discern as it is flooded with glaze.
Barbara Winrow has potted professionally since 1972, originally based in Campsall, Yorkshire. Her business, Piggery Pottery, is still producing work today, but is now based in North Wales.
It has a height of approximately 24.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.8cm and across the base of about 7.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1080g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
