This is a fine example of a stoppered glass jar in the ‘Sea and Sand’ colourway, produced by Mdina Glass in the 1970s.
The piece has a flattened rim, a short neck, and a rounded shoulder, which tapers in slightly towards the thickened base. The latter is polished flat and unmarked.
The stopper is of globular form and is hollow through to the peg. The latter is roughly ground, as is the interior of the neck, to ensure a close fit.
Both pieces are made from dark blue glass with chloride streaks throughout to give the abstract green-gold pattern.
This item is often referred to online as a decanter or bottle, but on page 82 of ‘Legacy: 50 Years of Mdina Glass’ by Mark Warner, the original Dexam catalogues show this piece as having shape number M157 and being referred to as a ‘Stoppered Jar’.
It has a maximum height (including the stopper) of 20.0cm and a height to the rim of 14.0cm. It has a diameter across the rim of about 7.4cm and across the base of about 8.1cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1380g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some faint water marking on the interior. This is only visible when the piece is held up to the light but this wear is reflected in the price.
