This is a classic example of a glass posy vase, probably designed for export, produced by Mdina Glass in Malta in the 1980s or 1990s.
The vase has a globular body, a short neck and a wide everted rim. The piece is made in three layers: an inner clear glass layer, over which is applied a mottled white layer with dashes of red and amber. This is then encased in a further layer of clear glass.
The base is ground flat with a matte finish. It is hand-engraved with the word ‘MDINA’.
According to the book ‘Michael Harris – Mdina Glass and Isle of Wight Studio Glass’ by Mark Hill, all pieces with white bodies date from the 1980s onwards. In addition, on page 126 of ‘Legacy: 50 Years of Mdina Glass’ by Mark Warner, similar ranges to this are shown as export products in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
It has a height of approximately 8.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.6cm and across the base of about 4.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 430g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
