This is a fine example of a handmade posy vase by Martin Pettinger and produced in the latter quarter of the 20th century.
The vase has an unusual, thin, undulating rim made up of five lobes. It tapers into a neck, before widening out to form the tapering body. The edge of the base has an unglazed, chamfered edge.
The interior and exterior are glazed in a dark, glossy brown shade. There is a hand-painted floral motif in yellow on two sides of the body.
The base is unglazed, revealing the underlying terracotta-coloured body. This is impressed off-centre with the word ‘SOMERSET’.
This mark was in use by Martin Pettinger between 1977 and 1994 at his studios in Dunster and Williton, Somerset.
It has a height of approximately 11.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.6cm and across the base of about 4.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 230g.
It is in good condition, although there are a couple of very small nicks (1mm wide) on the edge of the base (see photos).
