This is a charming example of a miniature decorative jug in classic ‘Majolica’ glazes, produced at the end of the 19th century.
The jug is of tapering form with a short spout drawn from the rim. It has a strap-like handle with a protruding thumb rest.
The body has been moulded to give the appearance of a brick wall with trailing ivy and berries. It is streaked with brown and green glaze on the exterior; the interior is glazed in a patchy salmon pink.
The base is unglazed, apart from a few drips from the body. It is unmarked, but bears two rough spots where the glaze drip was polished down after firing.
It has a height of approximately 8.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.1cm and across the base of about 6.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 130g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few minor scratches to the glaze, commensurate with age and use. It has been crudely decorated, and there are a few areas where the underlying ceramic has been ‘missed’ by the decorator.
