This is a classic moulded lead crystal bowl in the ‘Sweden’ design by Kosta Boda.
The bowl is made from thick lead crystal and is intricately moulded with typical Swedish scenes. One scene shows two pairs of dancers under the Midsummer Maypole, another shows the elf-like Nils Holgersson and a goose. There is also a bell tower which I believe symbolises Storkyrkan (the Cathedral of St. Nicholas), and a reindeer standing in front of a Sami ‘lavvu’ tent. Between each of these panels is a highly decorative stylised scroll and foliage design.
The rim is plain and uneven. The base is discoid in form and is unmarked.
The bowl bears the original sticker, which reads ‘KOSTA BODA SINCE 1742’.
This bowl can be seen on page 251 of ‘The Kosta Boda Book of Glass’. It has the pattern number 58112 and the design is attributed to Kjell Engman. The front of the book states that ‘The collection is current as of June 1st 1986’.
PLEASE NOTE: This bowl is regularly misattributed online as one from the ‘Rhapsody’ range. This is a different design entirely.
It has a maximum height of approximately 11.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 14.0cm and across the base of about 7.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 880g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
