This is a lead crystal water pitcher or carafe from the ‘ShuggyBar’ range, designed by Frank Thrower for Dartington Glass around 1985.
The carafe has an angular, oval rim that merges with the broad, cylindrical neck. This then widens out to form the cylindrical body. This sits on a thickened, discoid base. The latter is unmarked.
The carafe is made from vertically ribbed glass known as ‘Optic’.
It bears the original black label, which reads ‘DARTINGTON ENGLAND 24% LEAD CRYSTAL’. The black label is indicative of ‘seconds’ quality.
The piece also comes in the original Dartington Glass box, which is quite worn in places.
It has a maximum height (to the rim) of approximately 22.3cm.
According to the box, the carafe has a liquid capacity of 1000ml (one litre).
It has an unwrapped weight (including the box) of 690g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although as previously mentioned the box is quite worn in places, including a small tear on the back.
