This is a striking and highly unusual fruit salad set produced by Stuart Crystal and dating to the 1950s.
The large fruit bowl curves downwards as it approaches the thickened, pedestal-like base. This has been moulded with radiating ribs; the centre is polished flat.
The bowl is decorated with a fine matte cut circumferential line below the rim. Below this, the bowl is matte cut with four rows of eight-pointed star cuts, which are staggered with respect to one another.
The six smaller dessert bowls are similar in style to the main bowl, although they do not have the fine circumferential line below the rim. They are cut with three rows of eight-pointed stars in the same staggered fashion. The base of the bowl is moulded with the same radiating ribs, but the centre is instead moulded with a circular depression.
All pieces are unmarked.
This fruit salad set has the pattern number 29878 and can be found on page 19 of the 1955 Stuart Crystal catalogue.
The large fruit bowl has a height of approximately 10.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 20.5cm and across the base of about 9.8cm.
The six smaller bowls each have a height of approximately 6.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 11.0cm and across the base of about 7.0cm.
The set has an unwrapped weight of 3060g.
It is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd scratch to the bowls, in particular, a few deeper scratches to the circumference of the larger bowl. This is commensurate with age and use.
