This is a high-quality bone china cup, saucer and side plate set produced by A. B. Jones & Sons (Ltd) under the trade name ‘Royal Grafton’.
The cup is of classic form, with a gently scalloped and gilded rim. It sits on a plinth-like foot. The body is moulded with eight broad panels; four are divided into three smaller vertical ribs, alternating with four that are plain. The exterior of the cup is glazed in a teal blue shade. There is an ornate scrolled handle on one side, with details picked out in gold.
The saucer has a gently scalloped, gilded rim that is raised. The scallops are formed from the six moulded, fluted panels that echo the ribbed design on the cup. There is a central cup ring, which is picked out in gold. The space between the rim and the centre is glazed in teal blue.
The side plate is decorated in the same way as the saucer.
The underside of all three pieces is plain and marked in the centre in green with the words ‘ROYAL GRAFTON BONE CHINA MADE IN ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from 1950.
The cup has a height of approximately 7.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.8cm and across the foot of about 4.8cm. The saucer has a diameter across the rim of about 14.5cm, and the side plate has a diameter across the rim of about 16.5cm.
The cup has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 240ml.
They have an unwrapped weight of 400g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches and marks to the saucer and side plate that are commensurate with use.
