This is a high-quality china cup, saucer and side plate set in the ‘Chelsea Garden’ pattern produced by W. T. Copeland (& Sons Ltd).
The cup is of classic form, the body being moulded with vertical ribs that result in a scalloped rim. The rim is decorated with a mustard yellow stripe. The exterior is transfer-printed with a striking floral motif in shades of yellow, pink, green, and red. There is a further floral sprig on the interior, this time with a large blue flower. The handle is classically shaped and is decorated down the side with a mustard stripe like the rim.
The saucer has a gently scalloped, raised rim, also formed from radiating ribs. There is a central moulded cup ring. The rim of the saucer is decorated in mustard yellow, and there are floral motifs to match those seen on the cup.
The side plate is decorated in the same way as the saucer.
The underside of all three pieces is plain and marked in the centre in green with the words ‘SPODE COPELANDS CHINA ENGLAND’. This particular mark was introduced in 1891 and was used for many years into the 20th century. In addition, there is the pattern name ‘CHELSEA GARDEN’ printed in pink. There are also some impressed shape numbers and hand-painted decorator’s marks.
The cup has a height of approximately 6.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.8cm and across the base of about 4.2cm. The saucer has a diameter across the rim of about 13.8cm, and the side plate has a diameter across the rim of about 16.3cm.
The cup has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 175ml.
They have an unwrapped weight of 400g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches to the saucer and side plate that are commensurate with use.
