This is a kitsch miniature flower vase from the ‘Peking’ range by Carstens, dating to the mid-1950s.
The shape and design are reminiscent of oriental pieces. The vase has a gourd-shaped form with a low flared rim. The interior is glazed in chocolate brown streaked over pale yellow. The exterior is glazed with the same pale yellow colour, speckled with off-white. There is an abstract linear pattern in chocolate brown and white.
The vase has an unglazed foot rim, revealing the underlying ceramic body to be terracotta in colour. Within this, the central part of the base is slightly recessed and is impressed with the number ‘4’ and has the transfer printed words ‘WEST GERMANY’.
It has a height of approximately 7.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.6cm and across the base of about 5.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 180g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
