This is a classic example of a ruby glass jug produced by Whitefriars in the 1950s and 1960s.
The jug is made from ruby red coloured glass and has an angled, oval spout. There is a short neck which widens out to form the bulbous, globular body. It then tapers in to meet the thickened base. The latter has a central polished pontil. The body is moulded with a vertically ribbed design, which is more visible at the rim.
The flint (clear) glass handle has been separately applied in clear glass in the ‘celery stalk’ style.
This piece has the pattern number 9422 and can be seen on page 7 of the 1957 Whitefriars catalogue.
It has a height (to the lip) of approximately 21.5cm and a diameter across the base of about 7.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 880g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some scratches to the base and body commensurate with age. There are also two enclosed pieces of undissolved frit within the glass (see pictures).
