This is a handsome example of a wine or water jug produced by Wedgwood in a traditional Victorian style.
The jug has a classic trefoil rim, one lobe of which forms the pouring spout. On the opposing side, the handle extends straight up above the rim and curves inward to meet the body about halfway down. The body is of short baluster form and terminates at a thickened base.
The exterior of the body is decorated with an intricate moulded design of vine leaves, tendrils, and bunches of grapes. The design is in such good detail that the veins of the leaves can be seen, and where the leaves are seen from the undersurface, these are moulded in relief. The interior and handle are undecorated.
The interior and exterior are glazed in a deep shade of emerald green, which has a slightly iridescent finish.
The base is also glazed and has three raised circular manufacturing artefacts resulting from the method of stacking pieces in the kiln using a trivet. The centre has a slightly indistinct but readable transfer print which reads ‘WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND ETRURIA BARLASTON’.
It has a maximum height (to the top of the handle) of approximately 22.3cm, a maximum width across the rim of about 11.5cm and a diameter across the base of about 10.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1030g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze in places.
