This is a classic example of an open sugar bowl produced by George Gray at the Cinque Ports Pottery in Rye.
The sugar bowl has an everted rim and a cylindrical mid-section, and it tapers in slightly towards the base. It is decorated with a mottled matte green base glaze and a wax-resist black band of vertical lines around the centre. The interior is glazed in white.
The underside of the sugar bowl is marked with the words ‘CINQUE PORTS POTTERY LTD. THE MONASTERY RYE’ in black. There is also a handpainted ‘X’ towards the edge.
It has a height of approximately 6.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 9.8cm and across the base of about 7.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 150g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
