Thomas Webb ‘Mayflower 70’ Ltd Edition Commemorative Lead Crystal Goblet in Original Box

This is a superb quality and highly sought-after example of a limited edition lead crystal goblet produced in 1970 by Thomas Webb.

The goblet has a capacious bowl with a thickened base. It is hand-engraved with a highly detailed scene depicting the Mayflower ship on the water, with prospective passengers and their cargo waiting at the dock. This scene is bordered by a swag and flower motif. The remainder of the bowl is engraved with ‘MAYFLOWER 70’. The base of the bowl, below the ship scene, is the signature of the engraver C. P. Kimberley, and the edition number 1.

The stem is made up of a broad discoid knop surmounting a short, baluster section. There is a discoid collar at the junction of the stem and the foot. The latter is thick and discoid, and cut on the underside with concentric rings of oval facets, on top of which is the acid-etched mark which reads ‘THOS WEBB ENGLAND’.

In addition, the foot bears the original blue and gold circular paper label, which reads ‘THOS WEBB ENGLAND’.

The piece comes in the original velvet-lined presentation box with the original certificate of authenticity, which states that this is the first (No. 1) in the very limited series.

This piece was designed by David Hammond to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower on 16th September, 1620. The design was limited to 100 copies.

It has a height of approximately 16.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.7cm and across the foot of about 8.0cm.

It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 300ml.

It has an unwrapped weight of 510g (excluding the box).

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There is some wear to the edges of the box, but this is commensurate with age.
