This is a set of four high-quality lead crystal grapefruit glasses from the ‘Woodchester’ suite produced by Stuart Crystal.
The bowl is ogee-shaped and is decorated with six stylised ferns in a cut matte intaglio finish. The bowl sits on a wide saucer-shaped foot, which is decorated on the underside with a ring of matte oval-shaped cuts.
Each piece is marked in the centre with the words ‘STUART ENGLAND’. This particular mark was in use between 1930 and 1950.
The bowls are shown in the 1954 Stuart Crystal catalogue under the heading ‘Grapefruit Glasses’ with the number ‘27861’. This is the pattern number for the Woodchester design.
Each bowl has a height of approximately 6.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.2cm and across the foot of about 10.8cm.
They have an unwrapped weight of 1480g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches commensurate with age and use.
