This is a highly collectible character jug depicting ‘Bacchus’, designed by Max Henk in 1958 for Royal Doulton.
Bacchus is wearing maroon robes. His head is decorated with green vine leaves and purple grapes. The handle of the jug is formed by a grapevine.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Bacchus was the God of Wine and Nature, inspiring men and women to appreciate music and poetry. ‘Bacchanalia’, the harvest celebrations to honour him, were reputed to be such orgies of excess that the Roman government had them banned.
The base is marked with the Royal Doulton lion and crown logo, and the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND BACCHUS D. 6499 COPR. 1958 DOULTON & CO. LIMITED’. In addition, it is marked with several registered numbers.
It has a maximum height of approximately 16.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 610g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a small underglaze inclusion on the edge of his nose, which is a manufacturing artefact.
