This is a simple and rustic example of a beer or cider mug produced by the Roch Pottery in South Wales.
The mug is of classic form, with a slightly everted galleried rim. The body is waisted, widening out as it approaches the base. There is a strap-like handle attached to one side.
The body is decorated with a patchy green-brown glaze, with lighter rust shades at the edges of the handle and rim.
The edge of the base is unglazed, as is the underside. It is impressed with a monogram formed from the inverted letter ‘P’ and the letter ‘R’, which refers to Roch Pottery. In addition, it is impressed with ‘ROCH S. WALES’.
It has a height of approximately 11.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.4cm and across the base of about 8.2cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 355ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 540g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some roughness around the edge of the base where it was trimmed during manufacture.
