This is a pair of high-quality cut lead crystal candlesticks from the ‘Stirling’ suite produced by Royal Brierley Crystal.
The upper portion has an everted rim, which tapers to form the elongated, rounded bowl. This is cut with four large crosses, the upper and lower limbs of which come into close approximation. Above the centre of each large cross is a five-pointed fan cut. Within the diamond-shaped panels formed between adjacent crosses, and below the centre of each large cross, is a pattern of raised diamonds.
The base of the bowl is thickened, and there is a waisted portion where it merges with the elongated, baluster-shaped stem. This has been cut with six petals, which continue down the stem as facets. There is a discoid collar at the junction of the stem and the broad, flat foot. The latter is star cut and marked at the edge with the words ‘ROYAL BRIERLEY’.
Each candlestick has a height of approximately 18.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.8cm and across the foot of about 8.9cm.
They have an unwrapped weight of 490g.
They are in very good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches to the bowls commensurate with use.
