Pair of Purbeck Pottery ‘Rondo’ Design Stepped Stoneware Candleholders in Green

This is a pair of good-quality stoneware candleholders from the ‘Rondo’ suite produced by Purbeck Pottery in Dorset, England.

The short candleholder has a cylindrical upper portion for the insertion of a tapered candle. This flares out to form a square, with angular, protruding edges at the corners. This then merges to form two steps down towards the base, each square in shape.

The whole is glazed in a dark speckled grey-green, and the rim is glazed in a rust-brown.

The underside is glazed in the same grey-green shade and printed with the words ‘PURBECK POTTERY BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND’ and the company logo, consisting of a circle containing the letters ‘PP’. This mark indicates that these pieces were made before 1996, when the pottery relocated from Westbourne (a district of Bournemouth) to Hamworthy, a suburb of Poole in Dorset.

Each candleholder has a height of approximately 4.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 3.0cm and a width across the base of 7.1cm.

They have an unwrapped weight of 240g.

They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
