This is a pair of high-quality lead crystal claret wine glasses from the ‘Tor’ suite, designed by Frank Thrower in 1968 for Dartington Glass.
The bowl has an almost cylindrical upper portion tapering to form a narrow cylindrical stem. The base of the bowl is ‘drawn’ into the stem, giving it a pointed appearance. There is a discoid collar at the junction of the stem and the plain, flat foot. The latter is unmarked.
Each glass has a height of approximately 19.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 6.3cm and across the foot of about 6.3cm.
There are no size guides for this early Dartington suite, but having acquired numerous different pieces of stemware from the ‘Tor’ range over the years, I believe I have managed to work out which glasses are which. The size and proportions of these glasses would seem to match the ‘Claret’ listing, which has pattern number FT64-3. They were available in the colourways ‘Light Crystal’ and ‘Midnight’; these glasses are in the standard ‘Light Crystal’ colour.
Each glass has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 175ml.
They have an unwrapped weight of 260g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches to the bowls and feet commensurate with age and use.
