This is a stylish example of a utilitarian stoneware jug by Lovatt & Lovatt of Langley Mill and dating to the second quarter of the 20th century.
The upper part is of tapering cylindrical form with a series of widely spaced circumferential grooves. The lower section is of flattened globular form with a series of raised rings about 0.5cm apart. The strap-like handle had been separately applied.
The interior and exterior are glazed in a buttery, eggshell yellow colour, excluding the base. This is marked off-centre in black with the words ‘STONEWARE LOVATTS ENGLAND’.
It has a height of approximately 20.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 12.7cm and across the base of about 10.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1150g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some burst glaze bubbles in numerous places on the body.
