This is a highly attractive cut lead crystal cologne or perfume bottle, probably dating to the latter quarter of the 19th century.
The wide rim is thick and polished flat on the upper surface. The neck is cut with seven elongated facets. The shoulder is ‘stepped’ by three circumferential wedge cuts. The central ‘step’ is cut with horizontal lenticular notches. The body tapers in slightly towards the base, and is cut with vertical and circumferential wedge cutting, which intersect at ninety degrees. This gives it a raised grid-like pattern.
The base is polished flat and unmarked.
The stopper is of faceted ball form. The base of the peg and the inside of the rim of the bottle are both engraved with the number ‘35’, indicating that this is the original stopper.
It has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 15.8cm and a height to the rim of about 12.3cm. It has a diameter across the rim of about 4.3cm and across the base of about 5.0cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the shoulder) of 100ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 350g.
It is in good condition, with just a few minor nicks within the cutting. These are visible only on the closest scrutiny, but this wear is reflected in the price.
