This is a highly attractive and unusual example of a late 19th-century jug, probably Bohemian in origin.
The jug is made from three layers – an inner yellow layer over which has been applied a white marbled layer. The whole is encased in a layer of flint glass.
The jug is of classical form. It has a tricorn-shaped rim with an undulating edge. This tapers in and then flares out to create a ‘shoulder’. This tapers inwards again towards the discoid base. The latter is slightly domed with a central rough pontil.
There is an applied flint glass handle that loops up and then curves down to a lower attachment at the ‘shoulder’ of the jug.
It has a maximum height to the top of the handle of approximately 14.5cm, with a maximum width at the rim of about 8.8cm and a diameter across the base of 5.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 280g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are numerous enclosed bubbles within the glass which are from the manufacturing process.
