This is a fabulous old example of a measuring tape produced by James Chesterman of Sheffield, probably dating to the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries.
The tape is made from cloth and is printed with feet and inches on one side. On the reverse of the tape, it is printed with Gunter’s link measurements; between the second and third link, it is printed with ‘CHESTERMAN SHEFFIELD ENGLAND JC METALLIC 39’.
The tape is housed in the original stitched brown leather case, which reads ‘CHESTERMAN JC SHEFFIELD ENGLAND’ on both sides.
The tape has a brass winder in the centre, which is stamped ‘33ft’. The handle was their patented flush handle. The winder is in good working order.
It has a diameter of approximately 10.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 310g.
It is in fair condition for its age, with a nice patina to the leather case. The tape has been repaired at some point, with the frayed end having been sewn onto a piece of leather. However, this has since worn out, and now a portion of the end is missing. This is common in these pieces as they tend to wear out from use. This wear is reflected in the price.
