This is a high-quality cut and etched lead crystal wine decanter from the ‘Thistle’ suite produced by Edinburgh Crystal for over 100 years.
The decanter has a thick, everted rim and a short, waisted neck. This is cut with eight panels with flattened lower margins. Below this, the body has a broad, rounded portion decorated with a deep circumferential mitre cut surmounting a lattice formed from raised diamonds. The lower half of the decanter flares out towards the thickened base. The ‘waist’ is cut with a ring of fourteen overlapping facets and below this is an acid-etched thistle and foliage motif. This is repeated on the opposing side.
Please note: as mentioned above this is the acid-etched version of the ‘Thistle’ design. There is also an earlier engraved version. If you are buying to match an existing suite this detail may be something you wish to consider before purchasing.
The base is star-cut in the centre and unmarked.
The decanter bears the original rectangular purple and silver label that reads ‘QUALITY CRYSTAL FROM SCOTLAND’.
The stopper is an inverted version of the body, with a thickened, star-cut apex and hollow, tapering upper portion. This is also acid-etched with the thistle emblem, one on each side. There is a ring of twelve facets above a circumferential mitre cut and a rounded portion that has also been cut with raised diamonds. Below this, the stopper is waisted and solid and cut with facets. The point where adjacent facets meet is notched along the edge.
The neck is ground to allow for close fitting with the stopper peg.
The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of 30.8cm and to the rim of 21.9cm. It has a diameter across the rim of 6.4cm and across the base of 11.5cm.
It has a liquid capacity of 700ml to the mitre cut on the shoulder. This corresponds to the Edinburgh Crystal catalogue’s ‘wine decanter’ listing, which has product number ‘200214’.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1440g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
