This is a charming example of a nursery-ware teacup produced by Wileman & Co. at the Foley Works in Staffordshire, and dating to the first decade of the 20th century.
The cup is of tapering form, with an angular handle that is decorated with gilded lines down the edges. The cup is transfer-printed and hand-coloured with scenes from ‘The Babes in the Wood’. There are also the words ‘The owls were trying hard to sing, the babies howled like anything. The robbers fought (the savage thieves), the robins winked, and gathered leaves.’
The underside of the cup is marked with the emblem for Wileman & Co. featuring the intertwined letters W and C surmounted by a crown. It also reads ‘THE FOLEY CHINA ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from 1892 until around 1911. Below this is the registered trademark ‘RD 397890’. This corresponds to the year 1902.
The cup has a height of approximately 7.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.8cm and across the base of about 5.3cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 200ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 100g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze in places.
