This is an attractive novelty character jug in the form of a Harrods doorman, produced by Carlton Ware.
The rim of the jug is formed by the green peaked cap. The peak is picked out in black and above this is the word ‘HARRODS’ moulded in relief and highlighted in yellow. In addition, there is a central cap badge and two buttons at the point at which the peak joins the hat. The handle is attached at the back in the midline, extending from the brim of the cap to the doorman’s shoulders. The inner and outer surfaces are glazed in black, and the sides in yellow. The highlighting of the facial features has been skillfully executed. There is a grey glaze applied over the hair region. The tie is green.
The interior and the base are white. The latter is impressed with the number ‘4497’ and the words ‘CARLTON WARE MADE IN ENGLAND TRADEMARK’ in blue. There is also an indistinct handpainted mark, probably that of the decorator.
It has a height of approximately 10.7cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 170g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
