This is a nice example of a ceramic sugar bowl in the form of Tony Weller, from Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Pickwick Papers’.
The sugar bowl is approximately cylindrical. The upper part is formed by Tony Weller’s green hat and the lower portion by his neckerchief and coat collar, in green and red respectively.
The interior and the base are white. The latter is impressed with the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND BESWICK 673’. In addition, there is a circular transfer print, which reads ‘BESWICK ENGLAND’ and has the hand-painted number 23 in the centre.
This piece was produced between 1939 and 1973.
It has a maximum height of approximately 7.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.0cm and a width across the base of 6.2cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 130g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze commensurate with age.
