This is a striking example of a glass flower vase dating to the mid-to-late 19th century and probably continental in origin.
The vase has a trumpet-shaped upper portion and a bulbous body; these are made from white ‘milk’ glass. The base is slightly domed, and hand decorated with the number ‘17’.
The body is decorated with a highly stylised floral motif in blue, with faint traces of gilding remaining. There is a central fan motif, which is typical of pieces produced during the ‘Aesthetic Movement’. On the reverse is a further floral sprig.
The rim is decorated with a broad band in dark brown.
It has a height of approximately 17.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.0cm and across the base of about 7.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 520g.
It is in good condition, with a couple of rough areas on the inside of the rim. These are only visible on close inspection and do not detract from the piece at all. There are also a couple of marks on the interior of the base commensurate with use.
