This is a highly collectible character jug, designed by Max Henk in 1951 for Royal Doulton. This piece was in production from 1952 to 1960.

Uncle Tom Cobbleigh is a character from a popular 18th-century Devonshire song. Together with his six friends, he borrows Tom Pearse’s grey mare to ride to Widecombe Fair. The mare dies under the weight of so many riders and is reputed to haunt the moors at nighttime to this day.
The base is marked with the Royal Doulton lion and crown logo, and the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND UNCLE TOM COBBLEIGH D. 6337 COPR. 1951 DOULTON & CO. LIMITED’. In addition, it is marked with several registered numbers.
