This is a high-quality lead crystal hock wine glass from the ‘Richelieu’ suite, produced by Stuart Crystal in the second quarter of the 20th century.
The rounded bowl is approximately ogee-shaped, tapering in to merge with the elongated, baluster-shaped stem. The latter is cut towards the base with six matte wedges arranged diagonally.
The bowl is engraved with two motifs; one features hops on the vine, and the opposing panel consists of two stylised intersecting ears of barley.
The stem merges with the plain, flat foot. The latter is marked in the centre with the words ‘STUART ENGLAND’. This particular mark was in use from around 1950.
The ‘Richelieu’ suite has the pattern number 29248 and can be seen in the 1954 Stuart Crystal catalogue.
It has a height of approximately 17.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.4cm and across the foot of about 7.5cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 190ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 270g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd wear and tear scratch to the bowl commensurate with age and use.
