This is a set of four charming utilitarian wine glasses produced in the latter quarter of the 19th century.
The trumpet-shaped bowl tapers in and merges with the solid, tapering stem. The base of three of the bowls is decorated with a ring of nine inverted teardrop or ovoid cuts; one is cut with eight. The foot is plain and bears the remains of the ‘Y’ or ‘T’ shaped tool mark in the centre.
The glasses are made from soda glass (non-lead) and have a grey tint. They are full of minute bubbles and inclusions.
Each glass has a height of approximately 11.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.8cm and across the foot of about 5.8cm. There are some minor discrepancies in their dimensions due to the handmade nature of the glasses.
Each glass has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 78ml.
They have an unwrapped weight of 530g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
