This is a highly collectible character jug depicting ‘Athos’, designed by Max Henk in 1955 for Royal Doulton.
Athos is wearing a black hat with a white feather and a green tunic with gold trim. The handle is formed by his sword.
The base is marked with the Royal Doulton lion and crown logo, and the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND ATHOS ‘ONE OF THE THREE MUSKETEERS’ D. 6452 COPR. 1955 DOULTON & CO. LTD’. In addition, it is marked with several registered numbers.
It has a maximum height of approximately 18.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 940g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are two glaze flaws present, which can be seen in the photos. There is a glaze ‘miss’ that has been rubbed down slightly on the sword, and an area that has been retouched after firing along the brim of the hat. These are likely to have occurred during the firing process where items have touched each other and caused these flaws. Although the item has not been marked as a ‘seconds’, the price reflects these artefacts.
