This is a lovely simple example of a utilitarian glass jug dating to about 1870.
The jug is made from plain (flint) glass and is approximately cylindrical in shape, widening out towards the thickened base. The rim is plain, with a small pinched spout on the side opposite the handle. The latter is D-shaped and has a thickened lower attachment. The base of the jug is plain, flat and unmarked.
The body is crudely engraved with two stylised fern fronds.
It has a maximum height of approximately 17.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.8cm and across the base of about 10.6cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the top handle attachment) of 900ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 510g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches to the body and base commensurate with age and use.
