Chance Glass ‘Swirl’ Design Giraffe Wine or Water Carafe

This is a handsome classic example of a ‘Giraffe’ carafe from the iconic ‘Swirl’ design by Chance Glass.

The carafe is made from clear glass, with a broad, conical base that flares out to a trumpet-shaped spout with an angular rim. The latter is decorated with a broad band of gilding.

The body is screen-printed with the ‘Swirl’ motif, which is formed from a pattern of radiating lines in white. The ‘Swirl’ pattern was introduced in 1955, and up until 1970, the central circle from which the pattern radiates was smaller in size. Later examples have a larger circle with thicker, staggered lines. As this example has the smaller central ‘hole’, this particular piece dates to no later than 1970.

It has a maximum height of approximately 31.5cm and a diameter across the base of 12.4cm.

It has a liquid capacity of 1 litre (1000ml).

It has an unwrapped weight of 540g.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. although there is the odd wear and tear scratch to the body commensurate with age. The gilding is in excellent condition.
