This is a beautiful example of a high-quality flower vase from the ‘Romany’ suite produced by Dartington Crystal for the V&A Museum from the mid-1990s.
The vase has an undulating rim with a quatrefoil appearance from above. It then widens out to merge with the globular body. The whole is made from cranberry glass, which has a twisted ribbed effect.
The thickened base has an impressed quatrefoil mark with a central square.
The ‘Romany’ range was based on a Victorian idea, whereby the wavy top would allow the flowers to fall into a natural, organic display.
The vase has a maximum height of approximately 14.4cm, with a maximum width across the rim of about 11.3cm and a diameter across the base of about 5.8cm.
According to both the 1995 and 1998 Dartington catalogues, the ‘Globe’ vases came in three sizes – Small, Medium, and Large. This vase corresponds to the Medium listing, which has a height of 145mm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 700g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a blemish at the base, which is a manufacturing artefact (see pictures).
